CHOOSING THE RIGHT COSMETIC DENTIST

SELECTING A COSMETIC DENTIST CAN BE A DIFFICULT AND CONFUSING PROCESS;
We can offer some advice, which our clients have found helpful which may help you with the process.

As Cosmetic Dentistry becomes more popular you need to be aware of what to look for in a professional and well-qualified cosmetic dentist.

It is a critical decision and should be made with the utmost care. In today's marketplace many general dentists perform some types of Cosmetic Dental procedures and take a short course in the aspects of Cosmetic Dental surgery, but this does not make them educated to make the best decision for your teeth.

“When you're a hammer, every person who comes through your door is a nail” an experienced cosmetic dentist is a combination of skill and art to create the best smile for you. The answer may not always be “teeth whitening”, a good cosmetic dentist will be able to explain all the options available and have examples of work he can show you before you make any decision.

Choosing the right Cosmetic Dentist for you, one with substantial experience in complex cases, extensive hands on training, and a gentle approach that compliments your needs and wants is critical to achieving the most successful outcome- your gorgeous new smile.

You have come to the decision that you are going to change your smile forever. Unless you have had an accident and damaged your teeth, this is an elective procedure, it is not an emergency. Spend time learning about the different procedures so you are aware of what is available and what materials and techniques can be used with the benefits of each. You are then in a position to be alerted if someone does not thoroughly explain what is available.

Your mouth is not the place for on-the-job training. Continuing extensive courses in Cosmetic Dentistry, experience and most crucially an artist eye are important to making your decision. The field changes rapidly, someone who has done a quick course will not be equiped with the latest developments and materials to achieve optimal results.

With all types of medicine, specialties exist that indicate a higher level of education, knowledge and expertise. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has over 5000 members both in the US and 40 countries around the world. The accreditation process is a rigorous program, which requires cosmetic dentists to attend continuous education, tests and submit cases to be judged by a panel of cosmetic dentistry experts. Dr Dylan Yung is a member of the AACD and one of the co-founders of the NZ Academy of cosmetic dentistry; which was established to fill the need for credentialing in NZ.

Julie came to us with intense chipping and a root fracture.

Her middle tooth was removed and replace with a ceramic bridge. We used porcelain veneers on her front teeth.

Find someone who you feel comfortable with and can easily talk to. The first thing the Cosmetic Dentist should do is listen and make sure he or she understands all your concerns, needs and desires as they relate to your dental health and the look of your smile. They should explain the entire process of what is going to happen step by step, be wary of the doctor telling you just how “easy and simple” everything will be.

When you visit your Cosmetic Dentist he/she should examine your entire mouth, oral health, gums, facial structure before providing a recommended treatment. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder; your cosmetic dentist should do whatever possible without cutting corners to satisfy you and to meet their own personal standards.

Excellent Cosmetic Dentistry demands a highly sophisticated artistic sense; while technical virtuosity is necessary to achieve the optimal result one must have a clear vision on what is artistically possible and appropriate. A cosmetic dentist has to shape your teeth to suit your mouth and face shape. Only a true artistic eye can create this individual look for you.

Great Cosmetic Dentistry is an art, as it is still relatively new in NZ, you may not be able to act on a referral never select a dentist randomly. Ask how many veneers the dentist has placed, placing a number of veneers will give hands on experience while seeing a wide variety of different smiles to bring you experience that enhances your case.

Look at all the before and after photos you can, especially pertaining to ones similar to your smile, a good Cosmetic Dentist will take a lot of records and photographs. Be aware there are commercial photos available that dentists can purchase for promotional purposes. Things you can also do are: read references from other clients, a tour of the office and sterilization areas with a run down on the materials and technology used.
